Exclusive: Ralph Fiennes shows off his Russian in new trailer for Two Women

He’s starred in countless Shakespeare stage plays and was nominated for an Academy Award for playing a concentration camp commander in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List…but in new film Two Women, 53-year-old Ralph Fiennes reveals yet another string to his bow, acting and delivering lines entirely in Russian, alongside a Russian-speaking cast.

In the period drama, which is based on Ivan Turgenev’s 1854 play A Month in The Country, Fiennes stars as Mikhail Rakitin, loyal family friend of married Natalya (Anna Astrakhantseva), a woman terrified of losing her charm and beauty.

She consequently finds herself toying with the affections of Mikhail, while simultaneously falling for 21-year-old tutor Alexei (Nikita Volkov) and succumbing to jealousy of her young adopted daughter (Anna Levanova).

The atmospheric, lush-looking new adaptation from Russian director Vera Glagoleva also stars award-winning French actress Sylvie Testud (Final Portrait, Lourdes, La Vie En Rose) and Aleksandr Baluev, who plays Natalya’s husband.

Two Women is released in UK cinemas on September 16
